Simmel in Early American Sociology: Translation as Social Action. Translation as Social Action: Russian and Bulgarian Perspectives. Edited and translated by Palma Zlateva. London and New York: Routledge, viii, pp. $ cloth; $ paper. The reality of this slim volume is somewhat different than the title implies, at least to me. t assumed that "social action" would refer to the influence of translations on society and ex- pected discussions of.

This interdisciplinary synthesis of the social psychological aspects of language use provides an integrative and timely review of language as social action. The book successfully weaves together research from philosophy, linguistics, sociolinguistics, anthropology, social and cognitive psychology, pragmatics, and artificial intelligence. According to Max Weber sociology is the science of social action. Obviously it means any action in relation to other action and its important characteristic is the nature of being social. Max Weber himself differentiated such actions by giving examples. A driver driving a car is doing social activity and a student reading a book is not.

In sociology, social action, also known as Weberian social action, is an act which takes into account the actions and reactions of individuals (or 'agents'). According to Max Weber, "an Action is 'social' if the acting individual takes account of the behavior of others and is thereby oriented in its course". Translation is seen not just as a transfer of meanings from one language to another, but rather as an arena in which different cultures meet in the person of the translator.

It is now generally accepted that no general norms can be given for all translational activity, a realization linked to the realization that translation is an activity sui generis after all. As long as translation was considered mainly a secondary activity to be left to robot-like figures, there was little point in admitting that instructions might sometimes have to be : Vilen Komissarov.
